What is web copywriting
Web copywriting is the process of writing content specifically for viewing on web pages. This includes optimising the text so that it is picked up by search engines.

Why is writing website copy different from writing for print?
Writing text for a website is not the same as writing for other marketing media such as brochures and magazine adverts. Reading on screen is more difficult than from the page. Visitors read websites differently by scanning the page for specific words. They will rarely read all the text or scroll to the bottom of the page. This means that a writer needs different skills to produce web content.

What makes a good copywriter?
Web copywriters need to be able to write specifically for text that is read on the internet.  A good web copywriter is able to write great headlines as these are the first things to catch the visitor’s eye. As well as this they must be able to produce just the right amount of text, enough to get the visitor interested but not too much to bore them.

As readers jump from page to page and can enter your site at any page, copywriters make sure that every paragraph and page is written as if it exists on its own. This means that everything you want your visitor to know is included all over the site.

Can’t I just write it myself?
You could always write it yourself- but do you want to take the chance of losing potential new custom because you didn’t take the words as seriously as the design. It is all about looking professional. It seems a shame to spend time and money on good website design and then spoil it by not taking the same care and attention to the words.

Why do I need a web copywriter?
The average visitor’s attention span is very short and pages are read very quickly. Less than 50% of your visitors will scroll down to the bottom of the page. Therefore, your site must grab the reader’s attention otherwise they will go elsewhere.  Web copywriting is a specialised skill. Sometimes you need someone who isn’t too close to your business to give it a fresh perspective.

How does Search Engine Optimization fit in with web copy writing?
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a specialised field in its own right. Having said that, a good web copywriter will be able to incorporate key words into your content to make sure it is picked up by search engine spiders. This has to be done without reducing the readability of the pages from a human perspective.

Will improving my web copy get me new visitors from Google and the other search engines?
As web text needs to be picked up by Google, and other search engine spiders. This mean s that keywords must be worked into the text so they can be picked up by the spiders, but without spoiling the way the text reads.

How can I turn a visitor into a customer/member?
A good copywriter will make sure that the website content provides the information the visitor is looking for and doesn’t come across as a sales pitch – which is guaranteed to put people off. In addition to this, you cannot just leave your website when it has been written. It needs constantly updating and improving to ensure renewed interest.
