Rate your own website using the Elementary Index

To use the Elementary Index, first print out a copy of the form using the Print icon. Then rate each section of your website 1 - 5.  Do this by checking each page against the criteria listed in the 20 questions below. Add up the score and this is your Elementary Index score.

  Checklist for Web Copy - Does it Work!

 Score out of 5

  Overall look and feel 
1.  Is your content written from ‘me’ to ‘you’, not about ME!
 
2.  Does the site reflect your personality? Do you see yourself reflected in the content?    
 
3.   Is the style consistent throughout the site?  E.g. punctuation and spelling correct and titles, bold and underline only used for links?    
 
4. Do all hyperlinks work and go to correct page. Check these by clicking on every link.    
 
5.  Is your site is accessible?  E.g. Is the font 12 pts and do the titles stand out? Do the graphics have alternative text? Is there a site map? Check http://www.w3.org/WAI for more information.    
 
Writing Style 
6.  Do you use bullet points and numbers throughout your site instead of long paragraphs?    
 
7.  Are sentences short and to the point? 
8.  Have you avoided using jargon and unnecessary wording or waffle? 
 
9.  Have you used simple and active words such as doing, using, buy, get, hurry, and growth?    
 
 Content 
10. Is the main information e.g. what you can do for client and how to buy/subscribe etc is on the front screen?    
 
11. Does each paragraph answer one idea/question?
 
12.  Does your About page include descriptions of, who, what, where, when and how.?   
 
13. Have you announced what’s new with special links?    
14.Have you included diagrams, graphics and illustrations as well as helpful and free stuff in your site?

15. Does your website tell visitors what they should do to buy or subscribe.    
 
16. Have you used headings effectively (approx 8 words) with keywords and subheading (roughly every 5 paragraphs)?    
 
17. Have you followed the following formula to make the sale?  Get attention > show a need > satisfy the need > prove superiority and reliability > ask for order.    
 
18. Have you made it easy for your visitors to contact you or buy by Including links to your shop or contact page at ends of sentences and at strategic points throughout your website?   
 
Search Engine Optimisation  
 
19.Are you registered with the major search engines or directories?  (E.g. Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, dmoz etc.)    
 
20. What keywords do your customers search for and are they used throughout your website?
